Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 6-29-05
Theme: San Diego Politics
WOW: Catbird Seat – a situation that gives somebody power and an edge over others,
especially competitors or opponents
Sergeant in Arms Jude Awiylika began the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance after a brief room shuffle and food break, and introduced President Dick Larkin to the 18 members and one guest in attendance. Dick spoke of the club's great flexibility, and then reintroduced Jude as the Toastmaster for the day. It was Jude's first go as Toastmaster and he was as cool as a cucumber and did a fantastic job. Jude led the group with self-introductions and asked each person to share a view on local San Diego politics. He then kindly introduced the one and only planned speaker of the day Tania Fragomeno.
Tania presented her CTM 1, the Icebreaker. She grew up in Pasadena and fondly remembers spending a lot of time with her family at their restaurant. After attending an all girls Catholic preparatory high school, she moved to San Diego to be a student at UCSD. Her studies at UCSD led her to a study abroad program for her entire senior year in Italy. While living in Italy she had the great opportunity to travel all over Europe and looks back on the experience as an empowering one that has given her the confidence to accomplish anything she wants. Tania is back in San Diego working and is thankful to now have her family living in the same area. She spoke eloquently and confidently and we all look forward to her future speeches.
Frida Vissuet led Table Topics and called on Cher Vargas, Jose de la Torre and Gabriel Chong to respond to questions involving traveling. Frida herself will be making a trip to Egypt and Israel soon to help celebrate her wedding anniversary. Cher said she would love to go back to Costa Rica, Jose wants to make a trip to Europe again with his mother, and Gabriel has the desire to go to Hawaii and the Czech Republic.
Dick led the induction of the new officers and thanked the outgoing. We appreciate your leadership Dick and are also excited to see what the new officers will accomplish.
Matt Greenbergs served as General Evaluator, Darcy Konold evaluated Tania, Gabriel was the grammarian/ah counter and Arnold Ahyuen timed. Cher won best Table Topics, Darcy Best Evaluator, and Tania Best Speaker. We also heard some wonderful news at the meeting. Christina Baker is no longer a Baker and is married, Jose and his wife had a new baby girl, and Frida is having a big celebration in a couple weeks for her wedding anniversary!
Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 6. We hope to see you there!

Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 6-22-05
Theme: Summertime
WOW: Estivation – pass the summer; dormancy in some animals during the summer
President Dick Larkin started the meeting, leading the group of 15 in the Pledge of Allegiance, and introducing the Toastmaster for the day, me (Molly Frisbie). I introduced the theme and the word of the week and asked each person with self-introductions to explain how he or she likes to spend a hot summer day. The members of Century Toastmasters like to spend hot days in the sun, and in the protection of an air-conditioned house. We all had our own ways to beat the heat.
The first speaker of the day Joe Stewart presented a very important speech, his CTM 10. Joe chose the topic of genocide and used researched facts, history and compassion to inspire all of us to do something to stop genocide worldwide. The word genocide didn't exist until after World War II, yet almost every culture has a word for it. Joe stated that every culture has said never again to genocide, yet it's happening right now in parts of the world. He encouraged us to assist refugees, such as those in Darfur, and to write letters to let the government know we want it to stop. Well done Joe!
The second speaker of the day Byron Shovlain also presented his CTM 10 speech. What a treat for meeting attendees! Two in one day! Byron inspired the audience to look back at our lives and to think what would happen if we died today? Would we have done everything we wanted to do? Made the world a better place? Left our mark? Byron shared his own personal experiences to explain how he has pondered his own life, and found that he has lived a rich life, that he's still striving to fulfill more and more each day. Byron used great poetic language with an openness that struck and inspired the audience. Congratulations Byron!
Stephen Jaworski filled in as Table Topics Master on short notice and asked Rhonda Walthall, Matt Greenbergs, and guest Ken St Pierre about some of their goals for the summer. Congratulations to Ken for winning Best Table Topics at his first meeting!
Arnold Ahyuen served as General Evaluator, Dick evaluated the first speech, Stephen evaluated the second, Dee Williams was the grammarian/ah counter, and Darcy Konold timed. Byron won Best Speaker and Stephen won Best Evaluator.
It was a great meeting and we're looking forward to the next on Wednesday, June 29. Don't miss it! Free food will be provided and we'll be inducting our new officers into the club and recognizing the outgoing.

Dick Larkin, Club President, (center) congratulates Joe Stewart (left) and Byron Shovlain on their achievements reaching their CTMs. CTM = Competent Toast Master earned after delivering 10 speeches. This also earned our Club the award as President's Distinguished Club, the highest award given by ToastMasters International.

Joe's props made it easy for us to visualize the words he used. He earned his CTM with this 10th speech.

Jim Tucker uses body language to make his point. By the way, Jim has won the District spech contest for the past four years.

Darcy used our word of the week in her introduction. Estivation passing the summer; dormancy in some animals during the summer

Theme: Fatherhood
WOW: Pedantic – too concerned with what are thought to be correct rules and details,
e.g. in language
Jude Awiylika started the meeting on time with the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced the President of the club and Toastmaster for the day Dick Larkin. Dick recalled a recent story of being put on the spot to sing in front a large audience. He gives Toastmasters credit for helping him in the situation! He also explained the WOW and asked each person to stand up and introduce her or himself and tell of something pedantic in life. Every single person used the WOW, and answers ranged from carpool lanes, to airport security to golfers. Joe Stewart inducted four new members into the club: Arnold, Hannah, Jose and Quyen. It's so great to have all of you as participating new members!
Stephen Jaworski presented his CTM 8 speech and spoke of human psychology and needs. He explained how people's basic needs do not change when they become an adult, and used examples in modern media to illustrate his points. Thank you Stephen for your though provoking speech.
I (Molly Frisbie) also presented my CTM 8 speech using the topic of tap dancing. I delved into the history of tap dancing and tap shoes and demonstrated some of the basic steps.
Frida Vissuet served as General Evaluator, while Matt Greenbergs gave an evaluation for Stephen and Andres Acosta evaluated the second. Tania Fragameno was the grammarian/ah counter and Rhonda Walthall jumped in as timer. Andres won Best Evaluator and I won Best Speaker.
We had 24 people in attendance (OUTSTANDING!), and welcomed guests Mike, Bob, Maryland, and Eric. We hope to see you again soon!
The next meeting is Wednesday, June 22, noon, at Century Park, room 4120C. The theme is summertime!

New members being inducted. (L to R) Dick Larkin, Club President, Jose, Quyen Doan, Joe Stewart, VP Education, Ronald, Hanna Zhao

Molly shows us how to do a buffalo when tap dancing. It's all part of using visual aids to make a better speech.

Jim Tucker, a 3 time finalist in the International speech competition practiced his speech and opened up for audience advice.

Theme: Tax Time
WOW: Fiduciary – relating to the holding of something in trust for another
Century Toastmasters had the wonderful opportunity to host guest speaker Mark Gray of Liberty Tax Service. He presented several ways that ordinary people can cut taxes. He informed the group that important tax credits can be gained from educational programs and children. Mark also suggested investing in 401(k)s and IRAs as much as possible because taxes are deferred and your taxable income is reduced. Also, Mark highlighted the benefit of going to a licensed tax professional to help you with your taxes.
Joe Stewart bravely filled in as Toastmaster for the rest of the meeting and lead Table Topics. Byron Shovlain, Doug Goodman, and Heather Stachelrodt all answered Joe’s questions related to paying taxes.
With 19 people in attendance and 1 dog, we all enjoyed hearing of ways to save money. We welcomed Christine Walker, Nina Terrell and Fidel Castro as new guests, and Heather as our newest member! Welcome all!
The Area Contest will take place March 11, 6:30 p.m. at nearby Solar Turbines. Everyone is invited to cheer on our contestants, Martin and Jim Tucker.

Theme: Marching Towards Spring
WOW: Burgeoning – producing new buds and leaves; flourishing or developing rapidly
Century Toastmasters kicked the month off right with 19 people in attendance! Sergeant in Arms Jude Awiylika started off the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, before handing over the meeting to President Dick Larkin. Dick announced that March 1 was the 12th anniversary of Century Toastmasters. Congratulations to all members and special thanks to our Founders! Toastmaster Tony Gutierrez took the time to introduce our guests of the meeting, Heather Stachelrodt, Raquel Rodriguez, and Dan Selis. We hope you enjoyed your time at the meeting, and hope you all come back soon. After self-introductions, Tony jumped right into introducing the first speaker of the day, Jude.
Jude chose a very meaningful and personal topic for his speech; he explained to the group the process he went through recently to gain United States citizenship. It all started for Jude back at his home country of Cameroon. He was asked to go to the U.S. Embassy, and after several months of physical and medical tests he flew to New Jersey with U.S. permanent resident status. Soon after he moved to Washington D.C. where he completed his degree at Howard University. After deciding to apply for citizenship Jude went through a series of paperwork mishaps in San Diego, but as he said. “Everything was worth it.” After all his interviews, he probably knows U.S. history better than the rest of us.
Byron Shovlain, working on his CTM 7, chose to research and present on the topic of listening. Byron used his fine internet searching skills to find useful facts and tips for the rest of us. He suggested visiting www.listen.org. Bryon talked about the Benefits of listening, the Elements of listening, and Tips for listening. We should always remember to show interest in the speaker, keep our emotions in check, respect the speaker, not rush the speaker, and show empathy to the speaker. And Byron reminded us that we have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen twice as much as we speak.
I (Molly Frisbie) spoke on a topic I know very well, the American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition. I participated and competed in the event for 3 years in college, designing and leading the group my last year. I explained the purpose of the event, how the event works, and some of the details of how my team designed and built our canoes. I forgot to mention that the boats are about 20’ long, weigh anywhere from 100-250 pounds, and are usually 0.25”-1” thick.
Jim Tucker did a fine job of leading the evaluation team of Dick Larkin, Martin Olmeda, Matt Greenbergs, Joe Stewart, and Jose de la Torre. Joe noticed a good lack of “filler words” and we pretty much stayed on schedule for the meeting.
Martin Olmeda won Best Evaluator, and yours truly won Best Speaker.
The Area Contest will take place March 11, 6 p.m. at nearby Solar Turbines. Everyone is invited to cheer on our contestants, Martin and Jim Tucker.
The next meeting is Wednesday, March 9, in Building 6, Seminar Room 2. Don’t miss our guest speaker Mark Gray delivering a speech titled “Five Ways to Cut your Taxes.”

Theme: Speech Evaluation
WOW: Critique – an assessment of something, usually a creative work, with comments
on its good and bad qualities
With a dozen members present at the meeting, and guest James Jang in attendance for the second time, Century Toastmasters got off to an enthusiastic beginning led by the new America citizen, Jude Awiylika, starting the Pledge of Allegiance. President Dick Larkin opened up the meeting, telling the group of his experience in attending a nearby Co-op Toastmasters meeting, where they were celebrating their 31st anniversary. Back from Missouri, Doug Goodman volunteered right away at the chance to be Toastmaster for the day. Doug led the self-introductions, and asked everyone to introduce him or herself, and say how long he or she has been in Toastmasters. The award for the longest membership period went to Jim Tucker with 30 years under his belt, and Jose De La Torre got the honor for having the meeting being his first as an official member. Congratulations!
Chief Judge Joe Stewart got the competition off on the right foot by explaining the rules and procedures for the Evaluation Contest. He also noted that Century Toastmasters is hosting an evaluation workshop within the next month or so. With everyone on the straight and narrow, it was time for the “Specimen Speech” of the day.
Dick started his speech “Creating a Successful Club Climate” by first reviewing with the group the club’s accomplishments, but then went on to explain some actions Century Toastmasters can take to create an even better club climate. He asked us to think about setting a good example for others, volunteering more within the club, paying more attention to guests, and encouraging fellow members, among other suggestions. Dick presented the material very well, and gave us all useful, important pointers that can benefit the whole club.
The five contestants Martin Olmeda, me (Molly Frisbie), Jude Awiylika, Matt Greenbergs, and Byron Shovlain were led out of the room to prepare for our evaluations. After some quick note scribbling Jim took our papers away, and Martin was the first to evaluate the speech. All the contestants did a thorough job, and most noted Dick’s ability to focus and hold the audience’s attention with his voice, eye contact, and direct mention of audience members. His good use of the overhead and his slides was also mentioned, and it was noted that he could work on maintaining his energy level throughout giving a speech, as well as his speaking speed, as the designated time closes in.
After careful tallying, Martin Olmeda was announced as the Evaluation Contest Winner, and Byron Shovlain the runner-up. The Area Contest will take place March 11, 6 p.m. at nearby Solar Turbines. Everyone is invited to cheer on our contestants, Martin and Jim Tucker. Stay tuned for more details!

Speaker for Wednesday's Evaluation Contest
Although I'm happy to be the speaker for the evaluation contest, I've learned that it might be better to have someone who is working on their CTM be the speaker who is evaluated.
Who would like to step up and be the speaker next week?
One of the best benefits is that you receive evaluations from several different perspectives which gives you more opportunities to improve.
This is a fabulous opportunity, and we only have space for one. You may find that this one moment propels you to a new level.
If you're interested, please contact Joe Stewart Joe.Stewart@twp.cc . First come, first served.
Yes I can, Yes I will.
Thanks,
Dick
Evaluation Contest & Tax Tip Seminar
Next week is our club evaluation contest where one speaker (me) will be
evaluated by the contestants. Then the other club members vote on who
did the best job of evaluating my speech.
It's a really cool contest, because there's no preparation (except for
me) and we emphasize the benefits of Toastmasters' feedback which is
what makes us improve our communications.
You may sign up to be a contestant at the meeting, or let Joe Stewart
(joe.stewart@twp.cc) know in advance.
Also, we just confirmed that on March 9, Mark Gray from Liberty Tax
Services will give a 20 minute talk titled "5 Ways to Save Money on
Your Taxes". This is one meeting that could have an immediate boost in
your pocket. Please invite two friends to attend this session. It's a
great way to showcase our club, and to add an immediate benefit to all
attendees.
Oh, and one last thing. Our Club has already attained "Distinguished
Status" for achieving 5 of the 10 goals outlined by Toastmasters
International. Century Toastmasters is held up by the District
leadership as an outstanding model for all to follow.
The schedule is filling up fast. Contact Joe to get your next speech
scheduled.
Thanks and see you next week,

Theme: Public Speaking
WOW: Mellifluous – one flowing as with honey; pleasant and soothing to listen to; as, a mellifluous voice
President Dick Larkin got the meeting started, energizing the crowd of 16 Toastmasters, including three guests! Everyone introduced him or herself, and answered the question, “How has public speaking affected your life?” Answers ranged from professional development to helping in getting to know new people.
Chief Judge Matt Greenbergs began the speech contest by explaining the rules of the contest, and passing out the score sheets. Joe Stewart prepared as timer, assuring the speakers only present for the allotted time of 4:30 minutes to 7:30 minutes. Jim Tucker’s name was chosen as the first speaker.
Jim’s speech titled “Love Is” started off with the statement “It feels good to love, and have someone love you back.” His speech delved into the details of how he has learned to love in his life, and figured out what “love is.” For Jim, love is private, public and priceless. He learned about private love from his mother, public love from his wife and priceless love from his children. Jim’s skill of weaving personal stories into a universal theme the whole audience can relate to showed through with his touching speech.
Dick presented his speech titled “Mission Impossible.” Dick explained the blunders of helping his fourth grade daughter with a school project, specifically building a model of a California mission. His story expressed his experiences of trying to not only help his daughter, but satisfy his wife. In the end Dick proved to be an All-Star Dad, buying the best materials for the model, and even driving all the way up to Ventura to see the mission in person with his family. Dick always does a fine job of using just the right amount of humor in his speeches.
Toastmasters members then had the opportunity to vote on the speaker that moves on to the next level of competition. Jim Tucker will have the opportunity to represent Century Toastmasters!
Next week is the Club Evaluation Contest. Dick is the speaker, and three people will give evaluations of his speech. The rest of the Toastmasters will then vote on the best evaluator who will go on to continue competing as an evaluator outside of Century Toastmasters. Alan Colton is the Toastmaster for the meeting. Please email Joe Stewart (Joe.Stewart@twp.cc) if you’re interested in being an evaluator. It takes no preparation! The meeting is Wednesday, February 23, building 4, room 4120C.
Thank you to our guests Ben Greet, Maria Bastian, and James Jang. We look forward to seeing you again!

Theme: Sports
WOW: Champion – the supreme victor in a contest; someone who exemplifies excellence or achievement
The meeting got off to a good start beginning on time, lead by Jude Awiylika with the Pledge of Allegiance, and 15 people in attendance. President Dick Larkin took a moment to mention the upcoming International Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest. More info is to come on those two exciting events! Dick introduced me (Molly Frisbie) as Toastmaster for the meeting. I mentioned the theme and WOW and had everyone stand up and introduce him or herself and say his or her favorite champion and why. Century Toastmasters for the most part don’t have to look far for inspiration, as childhood friends, mothers, grandmothers, fathers, and children were frequent favorites. Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. also inspire the group.
Andres Acosta provided an interesting Educational Moment, filling the group in on the details of Super Bowl advertisements this year. With an estimated 35 million viewers, each 30 second ad costs 2.4 million dollars! Budweiser is the frontrunner paying a whopping 24 million for ten ads, and Pepsi 12 million for five ads. Car and beer companies will all be vying for our attention as we watch the game and think about how much money they’re spending!
President Dick Larkin presented his ATM Bronze Speech 8 titled “The Sales Training Speech.” Using experience from his work, Dick presented a speech to the group as though we were advertising salespeople who sell Yellow Pages advertising and are being trained to sell Internet advertising as well. Using humor, and comparative insight into Internet business listing, he educated all of us on the relevant need for especially small and medium sized businesses to advertise and list on www.worldpages.com.
Speaker #2, Emily Waters, presented her CTM 2 speech “Try New Things.” With the aim of the speech organization, Emily did a great job explaining the three main areas in her life that she wants to try new things in 2005, and told us specific examples. She likes to stay in touch with her creative side with art, and intends on taking jewelry making classes soon. (She also suggested taking classes at the San Diego Museum of Art!) In the realm of food, she’d like to try new restaurants and take cooking or wine classes at the House of Hospitality in Balboa Park. And lastly, she wants to try Pilates as a way to break out from the normal gym routine. Emily offered great inspiration and ideas.
Tony Gutierrez celebrated the completion of his CTM today with his speech titled “Speak from the Heart.” With his knack for engaging the audience, and delivering personal, insightful speeches, Tony did a fantastic job in capping off his first speech series. About five years ago at a seminar, when we was living in L.A., Tony met a woman who told him that he did not speak from his heart. From that moment, he took it upon himself to really self-examine his life. Since then, he has changed his career for the better, and has tried to focus on not only positively improving his life but the lives of others. We’re proud of you!
Due to time constraints, we did not have Table Topics, and moved right along to evaluations. Joe Stewart lead the group as General Evaluator, and past president Alan Colton delivered an evaluation for Dick. Alan congratulated Dick on his speech, and offered the comment that he be even more enthusiastic when delivering a training speech. Issa Zumot evaluated Emily, noting her excellent use of organization, with the small suggestion that she continue to use her arms and hands more. Robert Corbin evaluated Tony’s speech, echoing the audiences’ sentiment of how well Tony presents his speeches, and picked a very appropriate subject for the speech. Christina Baker gave the timer’s report and I presented Best Evaluator to Issa and Best Speaker to Tony.
The next meeting is Wednesday, January 26, in building 6, seminar room 2. Don’t miss our guest speaker Milo Shapiro. He’ll be leading us in an improvisational teambuilding workshop.

Century Toastmasters Meeting Schedule
Fellow Toastmasters,
Here’s a look ahead at our next four meetings (see attached)…
Please let me know if you’re ready to schedule your next speech or if you can fill any of the open spots. For example, we need evaluators next week (January 26) and have room for one more speaker. Also, please let me know if you see your name on the schedule and know you can’t be there that day.
Thanks!
Joe
